Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
