As Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Popular Image Captures Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many local residents, noticed loud noises reverberating through the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a couple who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching behind her. The person was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and ambulance crews attending to many the injured.

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many full-time lifeguards, stated that the crew acted heroically from the instant the shooting commenced right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving narratives, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines protected for visitors, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
