Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Discussions Over Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a new game mode called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features a few notable changes:
- Every squad includes just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by real players award full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Only two maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players looking for different methods to enjoy the title. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.
Player Reactions: From Fury to Support
"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. At the same time, in community forums, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this title," and another details all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," while someone else praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Concerns and Community Feedback
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it will make queue times even longer for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Lastly, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to offer complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the community meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should the development team has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and responding to player input. Assignments that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data shows this recent mode isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
