Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
