Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
