Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time spent in jail.

This news came less than two weeks after the ex-leader left prison as he contests his conviction related to illegal collaboration in a case to acquire presidential race money linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, and nothing to do,” he reflects in one passage, indicating the account will focus on his musings during seclusion as opposed to wider commentary of the overcrowded and struggling jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The din persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life grows stronger behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, he had appeared by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, easing this nightmare bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as ex-leader of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to go through the three books he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in Paris. Two bodyguards stayed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt in prison because he feared meals provided may have been contaminated. Options were available to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. It is uncertain if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer outside jail compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, listened to yells during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison on 21 October when the judiciary sentenced him to a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to acquire election financing during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, with a new trial is scheduled for early next year.
