The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined acronym emerged a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Selective Vision
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
