The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
